What I'm working onHi all,
I've been working on two comics for almost a year now. One is more of a personal project that I'm working on with a local writer. He and I have been getting ready to launch a kickstarter, but we may end up having to post pone it until next year. The book is called Rock Slingers (formally called Busterville).
The other book is Steamroma. I'm now 73 pages into this project and I'm four pages away from finishing the second book. Each volume is over 30 pages. I think there are three more books. As far as I know I'll be working on all the books.
I'm also reading one of Terry Brooks latest books The High Druid’s Blade. So far I love it. I've even drawn some of the characters for fun.
If I had a time machine...I posted this on my blog last year and I thought I'd post it again.
If I had a time machine and could talk to my younger self.
Dear 12 year old self,
Wow, look how young I look, I mean you look. Look, first off, shut up. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Sorry, I’m old and frustrated with all the mistakes I’ve made, which you hopefully will avoid. Now, you’re going to make mistakes in your general life, but that will lead you to some of the greatest times too, so don’t worry about that. All I’m here to talk about is your art.
This might be a shocker, but you don’t draw comics for a living. You make some good money drawing part time, but I’m better off working a day job and drawing comics at night. At least that’s how it worked out for me. Maybe that will be different for you. You’ll end up meeting and seeing a lot of great talent throughout your life, but don’t get frustrated or turn
Deep Snow - Narrow Path is outThe book I did the cover for is finally out. Please check it out Deap Snow - Narrow Path.
I have bought it and I'm reading it now. Hope you like it.
Getting back into freelancingAfter I finished my degree I was so relieved I didn't even think about moving into freelancing again. I just thought, "I'm finished. No more school." I've never been high before, but it has to feel something like that. Now my sights are set on making some good of this degree. Not that this degree is going to land me some great job, but I figure that it is a good motivator to make some money and pay back student loans.
I've done two book covers since my graduation now and I'm beginning to reach out to some of my old clients to do work. I may have some things lining up, but nothing concrete yet.
Anyone want a commission? Send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you're interested.
Finished with school...now what?!.It feels so good to be finished with this degree--BA in Visual Art. I started my first experience in college with this degree in mind, but ended up going for a career in a more stable work environment. 10 years after I switched my major and I finally felt it was time to get the art degree. This degree took me a little longer than I would have liked, 2.5 years. I could only transfer 70 credits, so I needed to finish 60 at University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). I would have finished in 2 years if I didn't take that one summer off. Oh well.
Now I'm back to doing freelance and commissions.
Devious Journal EntryMy last semester has began and while I had thought I might be able to coast through it, I was wrong. Lots of work to do, but I will enjoy these last classes as they are my last...unless I get a masters.
Devious Journal EntryAnother semester has started and apart from a few classes I'm finished with my degree. I can't graduate until Spring of next year, because I have to take this professional seminar that is only offered once a year.
I'm working on a portfolio piece for Marvel, so I'll be posting that up as I get them finished.
What I'm working on...I was just looking at my Deviant page and realized I haven't updated a journal in some time, so here we go. I'm finishing the semester, only to begin a new one right away. However, it shouldn't be all that bad, seeing as I'm doing one class at a time. Normally I wouldn't do a summer semester, because I like to take time off and rejuvenate, but I'm almost finished with school and I had to take one less class this semester due to my work schedule.
Right now I'm working on some pages for one of the big time comic companies, who have asked me to work on a submission sample of their own. I had a few pages they saw, but they want me to try their sample script. If all goes well I'll get to do some paid work for them. I'll try to post a few pages this month of the sample pages I'm doing.
I'm too tired to think of anything else to write.
Please Listen.I just got an email from a concerned parent. Her daughter has an account on DA, and apparently she copies and traces my drawings. I looked on her profile and confirmed that, yes, she did trace and gave minimal (sometimes no) credit. The reason her mother messaged me was because a few people were apparently sending her harsh messages asking her to give credit. She even got a few death threats.
Listen...I'm going to say this all again because I guess it needs reiterating: When it comes to my art, I do not mind young artists copying or tracing my drawings in hopes of developing their skills, or because they are still learning the way of things. If you see someone posting a traced or heavily referenced drawing that does not mention the original picture, please DO NOT immediately jump to aggression. If something like this (art theft/style theft) really gets on your nerves, then I understand why you might be angry upon seeing it, but you must find the maturity to take a breath, and

The Simple Character Creator FormulaThis is a copy-paste (with some additions) from my Tumblr blog (http://spaztique.tumblr.com/), but it must be reposted.
Twilight of the Hakurei, the club-wide comic tennis/RP (http://walfasstationwagon.deviantart.com/gallery/41877816), is turning out just as I suspected: AMAZINGLY. However, one thing that really astounds me is how well the character system is working. If you're not familiar, it's simply this:
1. Pick the character's biggest strength that affects other people. Note the key phrase, "that affects other people." For example, "He's really good at cooking," is not a strength: that's just a regular skill that only applies to one area of life and doesn't really affect others. However, "He's a fast learner," or, "He pays attention to detail," or, "He's very generous," is a strength because it applies to more than just cooking, but any other skill and especially relationships.
2. Pick the character's biggest weakness that affects other people. Once ag
Got hired to do Boosterville comic stripI'm just putting it out there that I'm doing a webcomic called Boosterville. We are at the very beginning stages at this point, but I was paid to do the first 10 pages and hopefully if things work I'll be doing this gig for awhile to come. I'll be posting regular updates on my blog at http://www.comicbookculture.com.
